5 Tips to Get a Greener Garden Faster!

The first day of Spring is Saturday, March 20th, 2021! Are you prepared? See below for our top 5 tips to get a greener garden faster.

Refresh your mulch

Take care of your barberry, butterfly bushes, hydrangeas and more by refreshing mulch in your planting beds as soon as the soil warms. Prime-time to add new mulch is after the ground thaws completely.

Prune those grasses

It’s time to tackle pruning your dormant ornamental grasses, like Miscanthus and Panicum, before new shoots appear. Cut Miscanthus into a cone shape, higher in the center. It helps keep the middle from dying out.

Cleanup flower beds

Last seasons remaining dead growth on your black-eyed susan, gaillardia and shasta daisy need to go. It’s best to use pruners, instead of pulling dead stems, that’s an easy way to yank the entire plant out.

Repair your structures

Take some time to look over your honeysuckle and jasmine arbors, trellises, pergolas and other structures. Early spring before plants grow too tall, is a great time to repair, repaint and re-stain.

Trim your shrubs

Pruning your flowering shrubs like rose of sharon, roses and spirea may seem daunting, but the benefits are great. Trim away spent blooms, and thin / too-thick branches to rejuvenate older plants.
